IDIAP Jordi Gol aims to generate new knowledge and practical evidence to promote, advance and manage primary-care research in Catalonia and other areas through training, dissemination and the transfer of results from research to clinical practice.

Since it was created in 1995 by the Catalan Institute of Health(link is external), the Jordi Gol i Gurina Foundation has been a pioneer in primary-care research in Spain. In 2006, the Foundation became the Jordi Gol Institute for Research in Primary Care (IDIAP Jordi Gol) through a collaboration agreement reached by the Jordi Gol i Gurina Foundation, the Catalan Ministry of Health and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Each health center in the AGICAP network has all the basic equipment needed to conduct clinical trials and carry out analytical and complementary exams.

Areas of clinical expertise

The Management Agency for Clinical Research in Primary Care (AGICAP) belongs to IDIAP Jordi Gol and focuses on promoting and managing clinical drug trials. It covers 87% of the population of Catalonia (7 million people). Candidates for clinical trials are selected from among hundreds of thousands of patients.

More than 4,000 patients have been recruited for over 400 clinical trials dealing with chronic diseases commonly seen in primary care, mainly phase III. The AGICAP network also participates in many different feasibility studies.

Recognition and distinctions

The IDIAP is UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 certified. It is also accredited to evaluate and support projects or research related to primary care and community health, and also to manage clinical trials for active ingredients, excipients and medical products.

Center-specific initiatives

The AGICAP offers a series of basic services like training and accreditation of its network of researchers, methodological and logistical support for protocols generated by its network of researchers, selecting accredited researchers and centers (within 10 days), fast preparation of contracts (negotiation with administration and signatures), single evaluation by CEIC, which is in charge of all the primary care centers and other bodies, quality hiring, patient protection and safety, help from monitors and centers and promoting logistics issues for each clinical trial, paying researchers and centers, designing research protocols, statistical analysis and trial follow-up, among others.

Upon request, the AGICAP can carry out quick feasibility studies using the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS) clinical-history database, which allows for active personalized pre-selection fitting the requests of research personnel in the network.

Teaching specialties

The IDIAP teaching specialties are Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Pharmacology and Primary Care Nursing.
