The IMIM seeks to become a global benchmark in comprehensive biomedical research with a translational approach. The IMIM combines quality clinical, epidemiological and basic research for effective transfer of knowledge to address the most relevant health problems facing our society.
Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), located in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), is made up in 82% of research groups led by professionals from the MAR Health Park (PSMAR), many of whom teach at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). The IMIM also has 11 seconded staff members from the Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL), Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), UPF Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (DCEXS-UPF), Barcelona Center of Regenerative Medicine (CMRB) and the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).
There are approximately seven hundred professionals working at the center, including 119 lead researchers in 56 research groups within the following framework programs: Cancer Epidemiology and Public Health, Cardiovascular and Inflammatory Processes, Biomedical Informatics and Neurosciences.
Areas of clinical expertise
The IMIM areas of clinical expertise are: Dermatology, Neurology, Oncology, Nephrology, Hematology, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology, Surgery, Pathology, Neurosurgery and Urology.
Recognitions and distintions
The IMIM is a member of CERCA (Research Centers of Catalonia) and was accredited in 2014 by the Institute of Health Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) as a health research institute. It has two ICREA researchers (Mar Albà and Andrea Cerutti), participates in 4 CIBER networks (Biomedical Research Networking Centers), has 31 accredited research groups (SGR-AGAUR), 2 ISCIII platforms and 11 groups participating in national research networks (RETICS-ISCIII). It also has an international Scientific Advisory Board made up of prestigious scientists with experience in the center’s areas of research. The IMIM’s annual scientific production (2014) included 860 publications in indexed journals (Science Citation Index, SCI). According to indicators in the SCIMAGO report, the IMIM is very well-positioned among biomedical research centers in the country.
The IMIM has developed its own database-management system (6IMIM) to control the institution’s activities (publications, projects, human resources, etc.). It also has a Technology Transfer Office and its Science and Technical Services are AENOR certified to ISO 9001: 2008 standards and Quality Services. Since June 2015, the IMIM has held the European Commission “HR Excellence in Research” seal.
The IMIM has more than 30 teaching specialties, including Clinical Analysis, Angiology and Vascular Surgery, Digestive System, Cardiology, General and Digestive Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Dermatology, Endocrinology and Nutrition, Clinical Pharmacology, Geriatrics, Intensive Care, Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical Oncology, Psychiatrics, Mental Health and Urology, among others.
